Freeway Park Primary School has a very interesting history. The school was originally called Elspark Primary School. It was situated near Vegieland. It opened its doors in 1973. Mr. L. Kilmister was the acting principal for the first year and then Mr. L. Booysen took over as principal. The name of the school changed to Rondebult Primary School. It was in the rural setting surrounded by trees and farm animals. The majority of the children came to school in municipal buses so there were no extra mural activities after school.
During the first year of the school, stationery and reading books were limited and the children did not wear a school uniform. There was no hall and assembly was held in the quad under the syringe trees.
The emphasis in 1973 was on the environment and the children had to learn about their environment. Our outings had to be within walking distance of the school. The Grade 1 children were taken to the sewage farm. This was the closest place of interest. On this particular outing one of the boys went to close to one of the pools filled with thick sludge and as a result was quite smelly for the rest of the day; quite different from the outings the children go on today!
